PERSONALITY
HISTORY
His grandfather, Cornelius Van Voorhis, was born and raised on Long Island. He fought in World War II in the Pacific theater. During his time overseas, he met Yuriel, who later became his bride. Yuriel and Cornelius had four children together. Their second born son, Lucas Stevense, joined the Peace Corps after he graduated college. Cornelius and Yuriel were grateful that this son didn't become a 'dirty hippie' as their eldest son and only daughter decided to do. Yuriel's fourth child was born late in life, after Lucas was well into his two year term in South Africa.
Lucas fell in love with the country. After his term of service was over, he decided to move to South Africa, much to his parents' dismay. However, the Dutch influence in the country, including the language, put Cornelius more at ease with his son's decision. Lucas worked in the health department, and fought against apartid. He was a firm believer in the goodness of Neilson Mandela. Lucas met Nkosazana and they were married shortly thereafter. They had two sons, Tendai and Nkosana.
Tendai was raised with religion surrounding his life. He was never a true believer; however understands the sway of preachers and words on the faithful. He went to church with the family until he was 18, then he stopped going abruptly. Tendai was more interested in his mother's people and their ways of life than those of the Dutch settlers and the scant people who bore his name too. Considering the Van Voorhis are one of the largest Dutch families, it being one of the most common surnames (in all its variations) from that origin, being more interested in the smaller population of the Zulu and Xhosa seemed to make more sense to him.
While visiting his grandparents in New York, he auditioned as a lark for a local production. Due to the surprising fact that he received the role, he stayed in New York. Unfortunately his director and then his agent thought his name was Tengu, like the Japanese goblins, rather than Tendai. The nickname stuck, so in some circles he is known as Tengu Van Voorhis instead of his true name.
He lived with his grandparents initially but soon obtained an apartment not far from Yankee Stadium. Two years later, he was still there when his agent suggested he audition for the roles in the up-coming Company Chronicles.
